The program Blue Flag.
Every year just before summer season all the coasts in Greece and in other countries are being carefully examined in order to be designated as proper and safe, with no environmental pollution and satisfying for the needs of their visitors. The award winning for each beach or coast is the “Blue Flag”.
The “Blue Flag”, is a symbol of quality in over 41 countries today awarded on strict criteria to organized beaches and marinas operated by coastal Municipalities, and hoteliers. The program of “Blue Flags” started as a voluntary program first time in France. The official start of the program was on June 5 at 1987 when it was presented to the council of the European Union.
Since 2000 in this voluntary programm have been participating 49 countries from different places around the world. The internationally responsible head-director of the program the FEE, (Foundation for Environmental Education) together with the Coordinators of the members countries, are constantly reshaping and changing the award winning criteria in order to improve the conditions on the coasts and marinas for their visitors.
Criteria for the “ Blue Flag”
So, in order a beach to get the “ Blue Flag” it needs to satisfy strict criteria relating to:
- Environmental education and information
- Excellent quality of sea water
- Environmental Management
- Safety, lifeguards, first aid, services and other facilities.
